A small eruption has occurred in the area of Bardarbunga volcano, but so far the Icelandic Met Office is calling it a minor event. Although the lava has been released under the ice of Europe's largest glacier called Vatnajokull, the red-hot magma still has 150-400 meters of glacial ice to break through before it reaches the surface.
The time table for the lava reaching the surface would occur within the next 0 – 20 hours according to the latest report from the Icelandic Meteorology Office. There is also a small chance that the lava won't even reach the glacier's surface.
The main concern with the volcano is the potential ash cloud could shut down airports around Europe. While Iceland’s airports remain open at the moment, a section of airspace over the glacier has been closed.
