Eruptive activity at the Holuhraun fissure, central highlands, continues steadily. Large amounts of lava continue to erupt from the active fissure vents and has restricted the watercourse of nearby Jökulsá glacier river.
In an interview with the National Broadcasting Service volcanologist Ármann Höskuldsson said the river has already managed to carve its way passed the narrow lava channel.
The new lava field now covers an area 50 square kilometres (19 square miles) and continues to grow.
