The outgoing Prime Minister, conservative Independence Party chairman Bjarni Benediktsson, will find it next to impossible to form a center-right coalition after the October 28 elections, the latest Fréttablaðið poll reveals. The poll shows that the far-left Left Green Movement maintains its decisive lead as the largest political party.

The poll also shows that the electorate has swung to the left, with the three parties on the left and center-left enjoy the support of 47.4%, while the four right, center-right or populist right wing parties enjoy the support of 41.8%. A conservative led government could not be assembled without the support of one of the left-wing parties were to join. Such a scenario is all but inconceivable in the current political atmosphere.
A decisive swing to the left
The poll shows the Left Green Movement enjoying the support of 27% of voters, while the conservative Independence Party enjoys the support of 22.2%. No other party enjoys the support of more than 20%. Next are three parties, each of which enjoys ca 10% support, the newly established populist Center Party (10.7%), the Social Democratic Alliance (10.4%) and the Pirate Party (10%).

Two more parties would manage to clear the 5% threshold required for representation in parliament, the centrist Progress Party (7.5%) and the liberal right wing Restoration (5%). A newly established right-wing populist party, the People's Party sees it's support evaporating, with only 3.7% saying they would support the party. Previous polls had shown the party polling in the double digits.
In the last parliamentary elections in October 2016 the Left Greens received 15.9% and the Independence party 29%.
A left-wing coalition likeliest outcome
Translated into parliamentary representation the poll shows that the Left Greens would emerge as the largest party, with 19 MPs, followed by the Independence Party with 15 MPs, the Center Party, the Pirate Party and the Social Democratic Alliance, each with 7. The Progress Party would receive 5 and Restoration 3.
With these results the most likely governing coalition would be a Left Green led coalition government of the Social Democrats, Pirates and Progress Party. This coalition would enjoy a solid 38-25 seat majority in parliament.
