Last night's snowfall: Roads out of capital closed due to record breaking snow accumulation 6053

13. mar 2023 20:46

This morning Reykjavík had 51 cm (20 in) of evenly accumulated snow cover at nine this morning when it stopped snowing. The Icelandic Meteorological office reports that this is a record at no time since measurements began has Reykjavík seen as much snow accumulation in February. In fact the snow in Reykjavík comes close to the record accumulation measured in the capital. In January 1937 Reykjavík had 55 cm (21.7 in) of snow.

Roads closed
This morning the Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority closed all roads leading out of Reykjavík were closed due to the snow. The highway to Keflavík International airport and Ring Road 1 to then north have been re-opened, but Holtavörðuheiði heath, connecting Reykjavík to South Iceland remains closed to traffic as the road is being plowed. People are urged to check road conditions with the IRCA

City streets being plowed
The Metropolitan Transit Authority cancelled all routes by the public bus system. Normal Sunday schedule begins at noon. Police in Reykjavík encourage people not to undertake unnecessary travel while streets are being plowed. Most streets in Reykjavík were impassable this morning. The city is currently in the process of plowing residential streets.

Police and ICE-SAR urge people no to try and drive before their streets have been plowed. When cars get stuck in the snow in the street they slow down the plowing, while there simply aren't enough units to help everyone whose cars are stuck in the snow.

ICE-SAR has other things to do than to deal with your poor judgment
The local news site Vísir reports that the Metropolitan Police and ICE-SAR search and rescue units have received numerous calls from people who have overestimated the capacity of their vehicles to travel in the current conditions. Vísir urges people to show sense: Stay home. ICE-SAR has other things to do than help you get your car out.

We at Iceland Insider would like to second that. Please show caution while driving today. Don't overestimate the capacity of your vehicle, and don't overestimate your skill at driving in snowy conditions! Let's keep accidents to a minimum and ensure that ICE-SAR and Police can respond to emergencies!
