The largest groups of foreign visitors in Iceland in 2015 came from the US and the UK, figures from the Icelandic tourist board show. However, the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service reports that American and British travellers seem to come during very different times of the year. US travellers primarily came during the peak season in the summer, while British travellers were by far the largest group during the off season months.
For a number of years the largest group of foreign visitors has come from the UK. Last year, however, Americans topped the list with 243,000 travellers visiting Iceland, a sixty percent increase over 2014. The second largest group of foreign visitors was from the UK, but only slightly, as 241,000 travellers from the UK visited Iceland in 2015. Nearly 40% of all foreign visitors in 2015 came from these two countries.
The next largest groups came from Western Europe and Scandinavia, Germany, France, Norway and Denmark, but then followed by China. In 2015 48,000 Chinese travellers visited Iceland, which was an increase of 83% over 2014.
According to the latest projections by Isavia, which operates the Keflavík International Airport, 1,731,000 foreign travellers are expected to fly through Keflavík airport in 2016, an increase of 23% over 2015. The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service reports most of the increase will be in the off-season months, rather than during the summer.
