A couple of days ago, landowners at Geysir were told that they could no longer charge an entrance fee to the area. A spokesperson for the landowners told Rás2 radio station that landowners have considered shutting down the area to visitors because of the District Court's ruling. He said that they are looking into a variety of possibilities, but one would be to shut down the area in accordance with Wildlife Conservations laws. Landowners have also requested to be paid insurance for the loss of revenue they've encountered because of the ruling, visir.is reports.

It is estimated that 50,000 people visit Geysir every month. With an estimated 25,000 visitors that paid an entrance fee starting March 15th this year, a total of ISK15,000 million (approx.€97,000) was collected. The spokesperson for landowners says that they have made zero profit and are barely managing to cover their costs.

The District Court of South Iceland has made it illegal for landowners at Geysir to charge an entrance fee. The landowners now consider closing the area off to visitors.
