Whether ticket-sales at popular tourist places in Iceland should include VAT (value added tax) to the ticket prices or not is uncertain. While the Commissioner of the Inland Revenue claims that this must be done, but landowners at Geysir geothermal area south Iceland, a popular tourist stop that started charging its visitors just over a week ago, have decided to sell tickets without charging VAT.
As reported by visir.is, landowners at Geysir believe that ticket-sales to tourist stops are exempt from VAT, but the Commissioner of the Inland Revenue says that ticket sales are not exempt by law, and a lawyer with the Commission says there is no legal uncertainty on their part. Landowners, however, say that because the revenue from ticket sales is used for land protection it is exempt from VAT charges.
The owners at Kerið Crater, south Iceland, started charging visitors last summer. They include VAT in their ticket price.
However it it still unresolved if charging for admission to the Geysir geothermal area is legal at all.
