When employees visited the showers and toilets at the campsite at Landmannalaugar geothermal area in the central highlands on Sunday morning they discovered that the campsite had been burglarized.
Honesty boxes fall victim to dishonesty and vandalism
The pay boxes by the showers had been broken up as well as the facilities honesty box. A less than honest person had used a piece of steel rebar to break open three of six shower pay boxes as well as damaging the honesty box. According to a post on the Facebook page of the campsite the burglar got away with some loose change, perhaps a few hundred kronur, but the damages he caused were significantly greater.

According to eyewitnesses the crime had most likely been committed by someone from a group of Icelandic travellers who had visited Landmannalaugar on two 4x4s during the night.
Burglar turns himself in, promises to pay for damages
After news broke of the crime a young man turned himself in to the police in Hvolsvöllur village in Southern Iceland to confess to the crime. According to the local news site visir.is the man told police he had committed the crime in a drunken stupor. He handed over the money he stole and pay for the damages he had caused.
