Landeyjahöfn harbour is likely to remain closed until spring, reports the National Broadcasting Service. Herjólfur, the ferry that sails between the mainland and Vestmannaeyjar Islands, will sail to Þorlákshöfn harbour during Landheyjahöfn’s closure.
The depth of Landeyjahöfn harbour’s entrance currently measures 4 metres (13 ft) but needs to be 6 metres (19.6 ft) for Herjólfur to dock. Large waves also make it difficult to maneuver the ship through the harbour’s narrow entrance.
“It is likely that Herjólfur will sail between Þorlákshöfn and Vestmannaeyjar Islands all winter,” Sigurður Áss Grétarsson at the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration told the National Broadcasting Service. “We’ll try to deepen the entrance whenever conditions allow. But we’ll need either northerly winds or calm weather for a week in order to do so,” he added.
Herjólfurs schedule for November 30 – December 4th is as follows:
Departure from Vestmannaeyjar 08:00 and 3:30 pm
Departure from Þorlákshöfn 11:45 and 7:15 pm
