Keep warm in Icelandic sheepskin jackets from Nora 4374

2. des 2016 16:24

Nora is a brand new design company that creates gorgeous, high-quality jackets from Icelandic sheepskin. Every section of production is done locally; the materials are locally sourced and produced, and the product is designed and made at the company’s workshop in the Reykjavík suburb of Seltjarnarnes.

The company is run by designer Ingibjörg Finnbogadóttir and business graduate Dögg Hjaltalín. It was founded a year ago when Dögg approached Ingibjörg with the idea of creating high-quality sheepskin jackets.

The business idea was inspired by a vintage sheepskin jacket Dögg purchased at a flea market some years ago; the jacket was incredibly durable, warm and elegant.

“Sheepskin fur-coats were very popular in Iceland in the 70’s, although most of the production was exported to Russia. Today, you rarely see jackets made from sheep fleece.”

Durable, warm and fashionable

“Our main goal is to utilise the Icelandic sheep skin to a better extent,” Ingibjörg explains. The Icelandic sheepskin, she says, is extremely warm and has excellent insulating properties. What’s more, it’s a byproduct of the sheep farming industry that Ingibjörg and Dögg were eager to utilise more completely.

The duo is adamant that production remain local. However, because of the company’s small size, only a limited number of jackets are produced each time and, according to Ingibjörg, the first stockpile quickly sold out.

To begin with, the production includes only one style: a white, classic bell cut women’s jacket. But plans are to add styles to the collection in the near future.
“We’ll be adding colours very soon, including grey, black and brown. And later we’ll extend the styles, adding mid and knee-length jackets and men’s jackets.”

The Nora sheepskin jackets are available at Epal, located in Harpa Concert Hall, and on the company’s website Nora.is
