According to Fréttablaðið newspaper the micro-brewery Bruggsmiðjan in Árskógssandur, North Iceland, plans to extend its business and open a small restaurant and a spa modelled after the popular Czech beer baths.
The brewery was founded by husband and wife Ólafur Þröstur Ólafsson and Agnes Sigurðardóttir in 2005. They produce around 550 thousand litres (145 thousand gallons) of beer every year and receive around eight to ten thousand guests at the brewery.
Czech beer baths date back to the middle ages when people would bathe in warm mineral water mixed with beer and other ingredients used for brewing beer. The baths are thought to greatly benefit one’s health.
According to Agnes their plan is to mix the beer with sea-water to create the ultimate spa experience.
Additionally, they plan to increase the brewery’s production capacity from 550 thousand litres to 750 thousand litres (198 thousand gallons) annually.
