Parts of the upcoming American superhero film Justice League are being filmed in one of Iceland‘s most remote and scarcely inhabited areas, the Strandir region, which stretches along the northern coast of the magical Westfjords.

According to local news site Vísir (link in Icelandic) around 200 motorhomes have been parked for the film’s crew on the outskirts of the tiny Djúpavík village. On location are Hollywood actors such as Ben Affleck in the role of Batman, Israeli actress and model Gal Gadot (Fast and the Furious) as Super Woman, Willem Dafoe as Dr. Vulko and Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo from Game of Thrones) as Aquaman.

This week the region’s small airport, with one hut and a single gravel runway, has welcomed five private jets and additionally there are three helicopters in the area.  During the winter the airport is often the only means of access to the entire region, when its single access road become impassable due to snow.

The crew is both filming in the area and inside the magnificent old abandoned herring factory of Djúpavík. When it was built in 1934 it was the biggest concrete building in Iceland at the time.

Djúpavík is a gorgeous town that used to bustle with life but now only has a handful of residents. The town’s backdrop is stunning; tall mountains, deep valleys and the lovely Djúpavíkurfoss waterfall which plunges off a nearby mountain cliff and flows towards the old abandoned factory building.
