An Italian cyclist who was found unconscious on a little-used road close to Reykjavík and Þingvellir National Park on Monday was pronounced dead at a hospital in Reykjavík yesterday. The man, who was in his twenties, appears to have fallen off his bicycle and suffered serious head trauma, according to police.
The accident happened on Nesjavallavegur road, to the west of Dyrafjöll mountains. Nesjavallavegur road runs alongside a geothermal pipeline which delivers hot water to the Reykjavík district heating utility from the Nesjavellir and Hellisheiði power plants. The road runs through rugged landscape and is little-used. In recent years, it has been closed during the winter.
Police have ruled out that the cyclist was run over by a car, according to local news site Vísir. Apparently, the cyclist had been going down a steep hill when he fell. Weather conditions are understood to have been good at the time of the accident and the cyclist was travelling alone.
The cyclist's name has not been revealed as of yet.
