Christopher Nolan's new sci-fi film Interstellar will be released in theaters on November 7th. Some scenes of the film were shot at Vatnajökull glacier, Southeast Iceland, last autumn.

Judged by a brand new trailer for the film (see below) it looks like the imposing looking glacier is a stand-in for a far away planet.

Walking on thick ice Vatnajökull glacier is featured in one of Interstellar epic posters.

In Interstellar McConaughey plays Cooper, a pilot and widowed father, who leaves his two children behind on a dying earth in a bid to save humanity. His team of space travelers embarks on a voyage through a wormhole to another galaxy in an attempt to find a new home for human kind.

Other cast members include Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Michael Cain.

This was the second time that Cristopher Nolan filmed in Iceland. The first time was for Batman Begins (2005), where Vatnajökull glacier also played a prominent role. Nolan's best known films are Inception and the Dark Knight Rises Batman trilogy.
