“First and foremost, it’s an opportunity for job creation and to get the town of Hafnarfjörður on the map”, Magnús Garðarsson told visir.is in regards to his idea to place a hotel-ship in the port in Hafnarfjörður. The ship is 79 meters (259ft) long, has 62 en-suite rooms, a conference room, a bar, and a restaurant that seats 130 guests. It was built in Budapest in Hungary in 1962, but renovated in 2011, and according to Magnús it’s being modified some more before it gets shipped to Iceland as a three-star hotel.
While details have yet to be worked out as to exact location of the ship in the Hafnarfjörður port, as well as some other restaurant- and hotel-related details, the ship is scheduled to arrive in July and be ready for operation in September.
The port captain at Hafnarfjörður harbor says that the idea is being well received, but many things need to be considered before this hotel and restaurants opens up in the harbor. He says that realistically it will not happen until next year.
