International flights delayed due to storm: Passengers in 9 planes stranded on tarmac 7740

The violent storm which is currently passing over Iceland is expected to cause significant delays to travel and air traffic. All roads from Reykjavík have been closed to traffic, and most other major roads in Iceland are expected to be closed later this morning. All domestic flights have already been delayed, the Metropolitan Public Transit has cancelled all service out of Reykjavík. Several international flights from Keflavík Airport have been delayed.

UPDATE: 10:05 The local news site Vísir reports that two planes were able to take off shortly before ten. The other planes were expected to leave before or around 11:00.  People who were stuck in the planes told Vísir that it felt like being on a boat out at sea, as the storm rocked the planes back and forth.

The IRCA has now re-opened the higwhway between Reykjavík and Keflavík International Airport. People are still asked to drive carefully. Violent wind, snow and sleet reduce visibility and grip on the road. 

International flights delayed
Six international flights which had been scheduled to leave between 9:30 and 11:30 from Keflavík have been postponed for up to 2 hours. The National Broadcasting Service reports that nine planes which had been scheduled to depart early morning are still stranded on the tarmac waiting for a chance to to take off. The passengers in these nine planes were headed to European destinations.

The planes were headed for München, Copenhagen, Paris, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Manchester, Oslo and two planes headed for airports in London. The Airport Authority ÍSAVIA expects the planes might have to wait for up to two hours before conditions are safe for take off.

All domestic flights delayed
All domestic flights by Air Iceland Connect and flights to Greenland have been postponed until after noon. The airline and other domestic airlines will reevaluate the conditions at 10:15 and 11:30. People are asked to check with their airline when flights will resume.
