Intense seismic activity at Bárðarbunga continues with an event measuring 5.3 in magnitude occurring shortly after midnight. The activity around the dyke reached a high two hours later. Around 500 earthquakes were measured between midnight and until now, most of the around the tip of the northward migrating dyke.
An event measuring 4.5 also occurred east of Askja caldera, the largest earthquake to be measured in the area since 1992.
According to the Icelandic Met Office “implications of Askja event is still premature to speculate on“. The events are closely monitored.
