A woman was badly injured yesterday while hiking near Stjórnarfoss waterfall, located near the town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Southeast Iceland. Local rescue units were called to the scene to assist the woman, who is reported to be an eighteen year old Swiss citizen.
According to the Icelandic Broadcasting Service, access to the woman was difficult. A rescue helicopter had to be flown into the narrow gorge and the woman was then airlifted to a hospital in Reykjavík for treatment. Her injuries are said to be serious but her condition is stable.
