Members from ICE-SAR companies in the towns of Hólmavík and Ísafjörður responded to an emergency call from a foreign traveler who had fallen while hiking in the mountains of Kaldalón fjord, an isolated small fjord in the Northern Westfjords.

The man, who is a foreign traveler, was hiking with a larger group when the accident took place. The nationality of the people or the severity of the accident have not been made public.

Espcially equipped mountain trucks had to be used to reach the man, as deep snow makes the area where the man was hiking extremely difficult to reach the National Broadcasting Service reports. The Coast Guard also sent its helicopter to assist in the rescue as it was uncertain the injured man could be reached otherwise. The local news site Vísir reports that the heilcopter arrived with the man in Reykjavík shortly after 17:00. The injured hiker is currently being looked after at the National University Hospital.
