According to a recently published report by the Reykjavík Welfare Department the population of Reykjavík was 121,822 in 2014. The population of Reykjavík has grown more slowly than that of surrounding municipalities in the Capital Region. Every neighbourhood in Reykjavík saw a modest increase in population, except the City Center, which saw a slight decline. The population of the City Center has declined since 2012.
The report also points out that 8.5% of Reykjavíkians are foreign nationals, with a total of 131 different nationalities.
Fewer people receive financial support
The number of people receiving financial support from the muncipality fell slightly in 2014 after having risen steadily since the 2008 financial crash. People who have exhausted their right to unemployment benefits can be eligibile for financial assistance from the municipality where they reside. The monthly amount can be as high as 169,199 for an individual (1,270 USD/1,150 EUR), which is comparable to unemployment benefits.
While the number of unemployed in Reykjavík reached a peak by mid-2009 and has been falling since then, the number of people receiving financial support has risen steadily since the crash. Current figures however seem to indicate that the number of people receiving financial support have begun to fall as well.
Currently there are just about 2,000 unemployed people in Reykjavík receiving unemployment benefits, compared to roughly 7,000 in mid-2009. In addition to those receiving unemployment benefits 4,088 received financial support from the Reykjavík municipality, compared to 4,218 in 2013, a decrease of 2.4%.
