However, increased traffic on Icelandic roads has caused a surge in traffic related accidents. This prompted the Iceland Travel Industry Association, the Road and Coastal Administration and local car rentals to join hands in an effort to enlighten motorists on how to drive in Iceland.

An information card containing instructions has been created and placed in all rental cars. The initiative has been well received.
“Our clients want to receive as much information as possible before heading off and appreciate the effort. I have no doubt that this will help ensure people’s safety,” Sigurður Gunnarsson, who works for Route 1 car rental, told Fréttablaðið newspaper.
