The 17th of June, often dubbed ‘Sautjándinn’ (The Seventeenth) in Icelandic, commemorates Iceland’s independence from Danish rule in 1944. The date was chosen to coincide with the birthday of Jón Sigurðsson, a major figure in Iceland’s independence movement in the late 20th century.
