“If the rates seem too good to be true, it’s because they are,” Buzzfeed journalist Nicole Nguyen says about Wow Air’s cheap flights from San Francisco to Europe.
Icelandic low-cost carrier Wow Air began ticket sales to San Francisco and Los Angeles destinations on Tuesday. The airlines advertised rates from only 99 USD one-way to Iceland and for 199 USD on connections to Europe, which many considered a fantastic deal.
However, Nguyen did a little research and found out that that the return flights were considerably more costly than the one-way flight to Europe.
“Let’s take a look at the 199 USD one-way flight from San Francisco to Frankfurt. The return flight? Not cheap. The 199 USD deal is valid for just one way, and nothing was more affordable than 400 USD coming back to San Francisco.”
And then there are the add-ons, she says; Carry-on luggage heavier than 11 pounds and checked in luggage will cost you extra, so will seats. According to Nguyen, you can wind up spending close to 1,000 USD on a flight you thought was just going to cost a couple hundred.
“It’s kind of like when you get cheap fro-yo and it ends up costing way more after all the toppings,” she concludes.
