Drivers heading out on the Ring Road today are urged to slow down and drive carefully. The Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority warns that drivers should expect icy and slick patches on roads around the island today. Travelers driving cars not outfitted for winter travel should be extra careful: Under these circumstances even a small mistake can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles, potentially leading to serious accidents.

Icy and slick patches have been reported on heaths and roads at higher elevations. This includes Mosfellsheiði heath, between Reykjavík and Þingvellir National Park; Holtavörðuheiði heath, which separates West and North Iceland; Fróðarheiði heath on Snæfellsnes peninsula, Steingrímsfjarðarheiði heath and other mountain roads and heaths in the Westfjords as well as Öxnadalsheiði heath between Eyjafjörður and Skagafjörður fjords.

Travelers should also expect winter driving conditions on the Ring Road in NE Iceland, as there is ice and snow on Mývatns- and Möðrudalsöræfi highland plateau.
