Iceland's richest 1 percent owns a quarter of the nation's wealth 1602

Iceland’s richest one percent owns nearly a quarter of all the wealth in the country, while 30 percent of Icelanders own nothing, in other words, they owe more than they own.

According to RÚV, the richest ten percent accounts 19 thousand wealthy families and individuals who own roughly 1.500 billion Icelandic krónur (9.791.122 euros/ 11.357.613 US dollars), or approximately 73 percent of all the country’s wealth. To be included in this group one’s net assets must amount to at least 37.5 million krónur (244.778 euros/ 283.940 US dollars).

RÚV’s report was released in connection to the annual WorldEconomic Forum meeting taking place this week in Davos,Switzerland.
