Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, the Prime Minister of Iceland who is resigning because of the Panama Papers-scandal, denies a report in the Daily Mail where Richard Branson, the owner of Virgin Galactic, claimed that Gunnlaugsson‘s wife, Anna Sigurlaug Pálsdóttir, rang him up in 2014 and said “I want to sign to go to space.’’
The Prime Minister of Iceland’s wife rang me up the day after the accident and said, “I want to sign to go to space,’’ Branson said in an interview with the Daily Mail in March this year. According to Branson this phone call came a day after the rocket plane VSS Enterprise came apart.
Sigmundur Davíð denies the report in a Facebook status and links to a story on local news website Vísir, which had picked up the story from the Daily Mail. The PM says:
“In a story on Vísir it is claimed that my wife wanted to order a trip to space! I had to read it five times and check just as often whether I was reading a story on a joke website or a real news website.
The story is rubbish, from the beginning to the end, so is more of the material on the media site that Vísir links to. But it seems clear that there are no limits to how far people will go in reporting in a surrealistic way about the people closest to me. Where will all this nonsense end if it doesn’t end at the Earth’s atmosphere.”

UPDATE:
It’s been confirmed that it was not the PM’s wife that was planning a space trip with Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic. According to local news site mbl.is it was the wife of Iceland’s president, Dorrit Moussaieff, who phoned Sir Richard Branson in 2014 and expressed an interest in a possible space journey. The English businessman seems to have suffered a serious lapse of memory.
