Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson, says it’s a disappointment that the USA is going to take action against Icelanders for whaling. He told ruv.is that the actions the USA is threatening are far less severe than the ones taken back in 2011. Jóhannsson released a statement saying that Icelanders have the legal right to pursue whaling in accordance to International Agreements.

Prime minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson agreed with Jóhannsson in Parliament on Wednesday, as reported by visir.is. PM Gunnlaugsson said that whaling is about Icelanders’ rights to use its natural resources and that Icelanders shouldn’t be banned from whaling by one of the biggest whaling nation in the world.

Members of the opposition in the parliament raised serious doubts over this stance and said that the interests of Iceland are being jeopardized by continuing the whaling of fin whales and trade in their products.
