Iceland's PM criticized for an irresponsible approach to the climate issue 284

4. feb 2014 14:17

The prime minister of Iceland, Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, said on Tuesday that problems to do with climate change can be used as an opportunity for Iceland. The Chairman of Left Greens, Katrín Jakobsdóttir, responded that dealing with climate change cannot be done through the tunnel vision of Iceland’s national concerns.

According to ruv.is, Gunnlaugsson is quoted as having said: “Water is needed. Energy will be more expensive. More land is needed. If it’s correctly assumed that food prices will increase in the foreseeable future, the demand for food manufacturing will continue. In all of this, without a doubt, there is opportunity for Iceland. We are mapping this out.”

Jakobsdóttir disagrees with the PM and says that it’s irresponsible to be looking at potential local success when the world is faced with the problems associated with climate change. She reiterates that these opportunities PM Gunnlaugsson speaks of could very well not be opportunities at all in the long run.
