Ólafur Helgi Kjartansson holds the Icelandic record in donating blood, after donating for the 180th time yesterday, which makes him the most generous blood donor in all of Iceland. According to Morgunblaðið, Ólafur made a promise to start donating blood after his parents needed major surgery some years ago.

“I’m type O negative, meaning anyone, regardless of their blood type, can receive my blood. This has encouraged me to continue donating blood year after year,” he explained.

Ólafur, who is head of the Selfoss Police Department, is estimated to have donated every drop of blood in his body – ten times over – and has even donated blood during visits to Australia, England and the U.S.
Ólafur urges anyone who can, to donate blood. “We should always try and help our fellow citizens – in any way we can.”
