Iceland's gravel roads cannot sustain increased traffic without better maintenance 1727

Iceland’s gravel roads cannot support the extra traffic that comes with increased tourism, reports the National Broadcasting Service. Despite the poor condition of these roads, there are no plans to increase funds for maintaining them, a decision the Icelandic Travel Industry Association is extremely unhappy with.

The route from Reykjavík to Látrabjarg cliffs in the Westfjords includes around 66 kilometres (41 miles) of rough gravel roads that are difficult to cross in regular non 4×4 vehicles.  

Þórir Garðarsson, vice president of the Icelandic Travel Industry Association, wants the government to increase funds straight away. “The state of the country’s road system is unacceptable. It’s time for the government to man up and act,” he said.
