According to local news website Mbl.is Iceland’s many gravel roads are the worse for wear this year due to poor maintenance.
The head of the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, Hreinn Haraldsson, says this is due to insufficient funding – the department was only allotted seventy per cent of the amount needed to keep the country’s roads in good condition. Maintaining asphalt roads was considered more important than the upkeep of gravel roads.
Ómar Ragnarsson, an entertainer and former newsman for the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, has travelled to every nook and cranny in Iceland and claims the gravel roads have never been worse than this summer.
