Iceland’s Forest Service (Skógrækt ríkisins) is looking for volunteers to partake in the Þórsmörk Trail Volunteers project next summer.
Volunteers can choose between a 2-week long programme and a 6-week long programme. Applicants need to be over 20 years of age and have some experience of camping and hiking. Many of the sites are in remote locations and, therefore, participants have to be physically fit.
The 6-week long programme includes tasks such as maintaining hiking trails in the gorgeous Þórsmörk area, survey work, GPS data collection, and erosion repairs in areas badly damaged by the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption.
Volunteers pay their own travel costs to and from Iceland. Food, transport and campsites are provided by Skógrækt ríkisins.
In 2015 volunteers built new trails around Hjálparfoss, south Iceland. A wheelchair accessible trail to the waterfall was completed last year.
Skype interviews will be conducted on 2 January, 2016.
