Hlemmur is located on Laugavegur shopping street and used to be one of Reykjavík’s main bus terminals. When ready, the food hall will house a collection of shops and various dining options.

According to Morgunblaðið newspaper, chef Gísli Matthías Auðunsson, who owns Slippurinn restaurant in Vetsmannaeyjar and Matur og drykkur in Reykjavík, is among those who have been allotted a space in Hlemmur. Other businesses set to open in Hlemmur are Te og kaffi, the Italian bistro Urban Pasta, and a green grocer carrying only Icelandic vegetables and herbs.
