Iceland‘s first ‘barefoot trail’ has opened in Engi, Blágskógabyggð district in South Iceland. “The idea was born a few years ago after an Icelandic lady, living in Germany, pointed out that the area was ideal for a barefoot trail,” Sigrún Elfa Reynisdóttir, Engi’s manager, told the National Broadcasting Service.

Barefoot trails, also known as barefoot parks, have been popular in Germany and Austria for over a decade. The parks are public and allow people to experience nature in a completely new manner by walking barefoot along a trail covered with various, natural materials.
The trail in Engi runs through a forested area and is covered with sand, cones, and pebbles, among other substances. “It’s healing to feel the earth under your bare feet, but also challenging because we’re not used to walking shoeless,” Sigrún Elfa said. Adding: “We plan to offer blindfolded treks as well, where guests follow a line strung along the path, to magnify the experience even further.”
