Icelandic product designer came up with a sustainable way to prevent food shortage 675

Búi Bjarmar Aðalsteinsson, a product design graduate from Iceland Academy of the Arts, had not expected the world-wide attention his final project from the school has gained.

Búi’s final project, The Fly Factory, is a sustainable, micro-factory that houses larvae which are then harvested for food. The designer got the idea after reading a 2013 report by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN called Edible Insects, which examined how insects could solve the threat of world famine.

Búi not only designed the Fly Factory, he also experimented with different cooking methods and has, for example, come up with a recipe for “tasty” larvae-pâté.

“People react to larvae as they once did to shrimp and langoustine, which once were considered second class produce,” Búi explains.

British, Russian, Japanese and Chinese news outlets are among those who have reported on Búi’s Fly Factory.
“It has a life of its own on the internet. But I don’t mind. It’s fun,” he explains.
