According to the National Broadcasting Service, RÚV, the Icelandic Prime Minister, Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, sent Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu an official letter yesterday where he condemns the disproportionate use of force in Gaza and urges Netanyahu to put an end to the violence.
Sigmundur Davíð begins his letter by expressing the Icelandic government’s concerns about the situation in Gaza where “innocent civilians, including women and children, are dying in large numbers as a result of Israeli military attacks”.
He goes on to say the high number of civilian casualties in Gaza are deeply disturbing and asks Netanyahu to shoulder Israel’s responsibility and call off “military offensives in Gaza and allow for humanitarian assistance to take place under safer conditions, and pave the way for further diplomatic efforts towards a more durable solution.”
The New York Times reported yesterday that Iceland’s ambassador to the United Nations, Gréta Gunnarsdóttir, is also among those who have criticized Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory in the West Bank.
“It is the occupation of Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, that affects all aspects of the daily life of Palestinians, that violates their human rights,” she said.
