Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir resigned as Minister of Interior after her former assistant confessed to leaking sensitive information about an asylum seeker to the media. Ólafur Þ. Harðarson, a professor in political science, says that Icelandic politicians can learn much from last week’s events.

Shortly after Gísli Freyr Valdórsson’s confession it was revealed that the Chief of the Metropolitan Police, Sigríður Björk Guðjónsdóttir, who was head of the Suðurnes Police Department at the time, provided Gísli Freyr with information about the asylum seeker’s case.

According to Ragnhildur Hjaltadóttir, undersecretary at the Ministry of Interior, assistants do not have permission to request documentation regarding specific cases that belong to their ministry.

However, Sigríður Björk maintains everything was done according to rules of conduct.
