A political struggle, entangled in a love triangle with some kick-ass music, is one way to describe the new Icelandic-born musical show entitled, Revolution in the Elbow of Ragnar Agnarsson Furniture Painter. The unusual title is a precursor for an unusual story, which highlights a community's false prosperity, and the ultimate ruin and rebirth at the hands of a power-hungry mayor. The plot provides an obvious parallel to the Icelandic banking collapse of 2008.
The music performed in the show is a powerful mix of emotional rock with influences from Radiohead, David Bowie, Grizzly Bear, the Flaming Lips, and Sufjan Stevens. The score was written by Icelander Ívar Páll Jónsson combines pop songs with lesser known acoustic ballets, all performed an ensemble of Icelandic musicians coming from various bands in the small country's rock scene.
Originally the musical's producers wanted to perform the show in London. However, New York seemed like the perfect place to premier a musical with this type of quirky storyline. The show begins performances at the Minetta Lane Theater on July 31st, but officially opens on August 13th.
