Two Pirate Party MPs are under fire for calling Donald J. Trump, the President of the US a fascist. During a parliamentary debate about the impact and significance of Trump's recent controversial actions, Þórhildur Sunna Ævarsdóttir and Ásta Guðrún Helgadóttir, both members of the anti-establishment Pirate Party, referred to the US President as a fascist. A MP for the conservative Independence party blasted the two in an interview with channel 2 of the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, saying their words were inappropriate and characterized by prejudice.

A racist, misogynist and a fascist
In a parliamentary debate yesterday afternoon the Pirate Party MPs expressed grave concerns over the political situation in the US. Þórhildur Sunna called on the Icelandic government to take a firmer stand against Trump:

It worries me that the President of the US is a fascist, a misogynist and a racist, but it worries me even more that he has publicly said he wants to resume the use of torture, which is a crime against humanity and a war crime…

Shortly after Þórhildur Sunna had finished her speech another Pirate Party MP, Ásta Guðrún added:

I think it is crucial that we start using the correct words, especially the word I think best describes the policies and politics of Donald Trump, the President of the US. Donald Trump is a fascist. That's the fact.

A democratically elected president
In an interview with the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service this morning, Óli Björn Kárason, a MP for the conservative Independence party criticized the Pirate Party MPs for their words. Óli Björn described Trump as an unpredictable rascal, but said it was counterproductive and disrespectful to call him a fascist.

I don't think it is appropriate for members of Parliament to call the President of the US a fascist, even if people might not like him or his politics. We can disagree about him, and everything he does, but we do not call the democratically elected President of the US a fascist.

The hard steel fist of the state
Óli Björn recently came under fire from the left after he called for a crackdown on asylum seekers and immigrants who abuse the welfare system. In an interview with a local right-wing talk radio station he called for the state to use its hard fist of steel against such people.
