According to the latest FIFA rankings, published earlier today, the Icelandic national team rises three spots 19. This is the highest ranking Iceland has ever achieved. In February Iceland reached 20.
The FIFA ranking also shows Iceland is ranked 12th best in Europe.
Breaking into the top 20 in the FIFA rankings an important achievement, but the big test facing the Icelandic national team comes in September and October, when Iceland meets the Ukraine and Turkey, in the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Iceland won a surprise 1-0 victory against Croatia in the qualifiers on June 11. Croatia is ranked as 15th strongest national team.
Turkey is ranked 33rd and the Ukraine 25th strongest national teams.
