Analysis by the local advertising agency H:N Markaðssamskipti of Instagram hashtags relating to Iceland has revealed that Icelandic horses and popular bands are more captivating than popular tourist destinations like the Blue Lagoon, or famous sights like Gullfoss waterfall and the Geysir geothermal area.

The agency analyzed a number hashtags relating to Iceland. Unsurprisingly the hashtag relating to Iceland was #iceland, with 1,946,172 uses, followed closely by #reykjavik, which had been used 359,373 times. The #bluelagoon appeared 285,856 times and the general tag #icelandic came up 106,077 times.

Popular tourist destinations included #geysir (32,771 uses) #gullfoss (28,820 uses), #jokulsarlon (15,447 uses), #hallgrimskirkja (11,564 uses) #thingvellir (11,473 uses) and #seljalandsfoss (11,071 uses).

However, waterfalls, geysers or glacial lagoons could not compete with the friendly Icelandic horse or Icelandic music. #IcelandicHorse has been used 97,892 times, while Gullfoss, Geysir geothermal area, Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon and Þingvellir national park only appear a combined 88,511 times.

The local news site visir.is points out that these figures seem to indicate it is primarily horses and music, rather than dramatic landscapes, which draw foreign visitors to Iceland.
