Icelandic government willing to host potential Putin-Trump Summit in Reykjavík 5860

The Icelandic government has not received any word from either Russia or the US about a potential Reykjavík Summit between Russian president Vladimir Putin or the US President-elect Donald Trump. However, the Icelandic Foreign Minister says that Iceland is ready and willing to host a Summit meeting between the two world leaders. In 1986 Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev met at a Summit in Reykjavík which many historians consider to have marked the beginning of the end of the Cold War.

On Sunday the UK newspaper The Times ran a front-page story claiming that people close to Trump had approached Russian authorities with the idea. The Financial Times has reported that the idea came from Russian Officials. The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service reports that Neither the foreign ministry of Iceland nor the Icelandic Embassy in Washington have been contacted regarding a Summit in Iceland. The Foreign Ministry is looking into the matter. Reports on the idea do not seem to agree whether the idea of a Reykjavík Summit is actually on the table or not.

Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson, the Foreign Minister of Iceland told RÚV that the government is monitoring the issue and remains in contact with the governments of both Russia and the US. The Icelandic government would be willing and able to respond quickly and positively to a request for a meeting in Reykjavík, Guðlaugur told RÚV: 

We will certainly do our part if we receive such a request. I think that everyone involved wishes to work for the common good. The 1986 Reykjavík Summit certainly produced positive results.
