Icelandic mobile game developer Plain Vanilla Games has gone out of business. All of the company’s 36 employees were laid-off this morning, reports the National Broadcasting Service. The reason is directly related to NBC’s decision to pull the plug on its planned prime-time game show which was developed in co-operation with Plain Vanilla.

In 2013, Plain Vanilla’s mobile trivia app QuizUp became the fastest-growing mobile game of all time, with over 80 million current users world-wide. The game is a multi-player game in which players competes against each other during seven rounds of timed questions on various subjects.

In September last year, broadcasting network NBC announced plans to develop QuizUp into a prime-time game show which was to air in 2016. The network ordered 10 episodes and was in talks to sell the show in at least eight other countries.

According to founder and CEO Þorsteinn B. Friðriksson, Plain Vanilla had been developing the game show for the past two years. He says that NBC’s decision came as quite the shock.

The QuizUp app is expected to live on, but the game’s ownership is currently undecided.
