The fans of the Icelandic national football team have won a nomination as the fans of the year in a new FIFA contest, as Fans of the Year. The Icelandic fans are among three finalists for the award, chosen by a panel of experts. The final winner will be chosen by the public: You can vote until January 9.

FIFA explains that the new award recognizes an outstanding fan moment or gesture from the calendar year 2016. The Icelandic fans are recognized for their performance during the July 3 match against France in the EURO 2016 quarter finals. Iceland lost the match 5-2 to France. However, nobody had expected that Iceland would reach the this far in the tournament. The performance of the Icelandic team during EURO 2016 will be remembered in the annals of football history as one of the most unexpected and inspiring moments.
The rationale for choosing Iceland, according to FIFA are both the superbly-choreographed fan chants, which became one of the iconic images of UEFA EURO 2016 as well as the massive support of the team, more than eight per cent of the tiny country’s population travelling to France.

The other contestants for the year's fans are the supporters of ADO Den Haag, FC Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund.
