The disparity in university education between Icelandic females and males has risen gradually; this is one of the trends in Icelandic society revealed in a population census from 2011 according to Statistics Iceland. Furthermore, the bureau has been analyzing data about the links between employment, family status and education. In an interview on rúv.is, Magnús Magnússon office manager of Statistics Iceland says “this data will assist us in researching Icelandic society in detail, not only on a macro level but we can examine it like in a microscope”.

Magnús also stated that the census revealed crucial information for the government because educational levels have been taken in for the first time. According to the census, 35% of Icelanders have finished secondary education or a gymnasium degree, with males being in the majority of this percentage.

However, this trend turns around in regards to university education. 25% of Icelanders have finished a university degree, with females being the majority of that number. Ómar Harðarson, quality manager at Statistics Iceland  is quoted saying  “this trend has been surging in the past 40 years”.
