Icelandic Coast Guard will attempt to free stranded cargo ship today 1565

A Bahama-registered cargo ship ran aground off the coast of Fáskrúðsfjörður, East Iceland, two days ago. The accident was likely cause by loss of engine power. No injuries or environmental damage was caused, according to reports. The Icelandic Coast Guard will attempt to free the ship today.

The ship was en route to Fáskrúðsfjörður on Wednesday to pick up goods when it stranded. The shipping company was awarded a time limit to come up with a rescue plan shortly after the accident. However, they did not and refused any assistance from the Icelandic Coast Guard.

Icelandic officials therefore decided to intervene this morning and attempt to free the ship during high tides at 10 am. This is done according to regulations and in order to prevent possible environmental damage.
