A study by the local business newspaper Viðskiptablaðið reveals that the CEOs of the largest companies in Iceland receive on average only six times more in pay than the average employee at their companies.
The newspaper studied average pay of regular employees and the CEO pay at all companies listed in the Icelandic Stock Exchange. On average Icelandic CEOs make six times more than the average employee at their companies.
Highest paid CEO made 18x his average employees
Two CEOs, however made significantly more. The CEO of prosthetics manufacturer Össur makes eighteen times more than the average employee at the company and the CEO of retailing holding company Hagar, which owns the Hagkaup and Bónus supermarkets makes fifteen times what his average employees make. Compared to the average Icelander, the CEO of Össur did quite well, making 34 times more last year than the average Icelandic wage earner.
The highest paid CEO of a publicly listed Icelandic company is the CEO of Össur, who made 182 million ISK last year (1.4 million USD/1.2 million EUR). The average employee at Össur made 10 million ISK (80,000 USD/70,000 EUR).
