Playing a superhero was a “crazy adventure”, Tómas tells the local newspaper Fréttablaðið. Tómas‘ character Caliban is a leader of the Morlock. His superpower is that he can sense and track other mutants, allowing him to operate as a kind of mutant broker. In an interview with Fréttablaðið Tómas describes the character as a hero which is neither good nor evil: “The character is in a grey area, he‘s neither good nor evil, a complete opportunist.”
Starring in a movie with major Hollywood stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender is very exciting Tómas told Fréttablaðið. Starring in the movie was something of a dream come true for Tómas. Two years ago Tómas saw a X-Men movie in a shopping mall cinemaplex in Poland, and thought to himself how cool it would be to play in a movie like that. “I though to myself I really would have liked to star in that movie, playing against Jennifer Lawrence. And then one year later I am actually standing in those steps, which is a bit surreal!”
Read comic books and walked around Berlin in the costume to get into character
To ensure the plot of the movie is not accidentally released to the public too soon the filming takes place under a thick veil of secrecy. Tómas did not get the entire script, for example, only his scene. “You need to go your own way to find information, go to the comic books, for example.”
The crucial step, for Tómas, comes when he puts on the costume. “For me it all begins with the costume, including the shoes. I went twice to London to fit the costumes for the movie, and then I try to wear them for a few days; I go out to walk in the clothes and allow the character to slowly come to me that way, for example through how he would walk.“ He told Fréttablaðið that he got the costume for the X-men movie sent to him in Berlin, which allowed him to get into character by walking around Berlin.
Hopes the fans like Caliban so that he gets to return in the next X-Men movie
