Two Icelanders won gold medals at the 2015 European Open Championships of Amateur MMA which were held in Birmingham England this weekend.
Sunna Rannveig Davíðsdóttir won gold in women’s flyweight category (52.2kg/115 lbs – 56.7 kg/135 lbs) and Bjarki Þór Pálsson won gold in men’s welterweight (70.3 kg/155 lbs – 77.1 kg/170 lbs).
Both Sunna and Bjarki defeated the current world champions in their respective classes. Sunna defeated Anja Saxmark from Sweden, delivering a technical knockout in the second round. With the defeat she became the first Icelander to become a European champion in the sport. A few hours later she was followed by Bjarki Þór who defeated the Bulgarian Dorian Dermendzhiev. Pétur Jóhannes Óskarsson also secured a bronze in men’s heavyweight category.
This is the first time the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation IMMAF holds its European Amateur Championships. 130 competitors from 30 countries participated in the championship.
