According to the National Broadcasting Service, RÚV, the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies has already received a number of name suggestions for the new lava field created by the ongoing Holuhraun eruption. Holuhraun is the name of an already existing lava field that formed in 1900.
One candidate is Nornahraun (Witch’s Lava) because of the great amounts of Pele’s hair the eruption has produced. Other candidates are Flæðahraun, Dyngjuhraun and Jökulsárhraun. RÚV has encourages Icelanders to send in their ideas via Facebook.
In 1973 the Icelandic daily-paper, Morgunblaðið, ran an article where readers were encouraged to send in name suggestions for the new mountain that formed during the Heimaey eruption. The name that won by a nose was Eldfell.
